General
Kalahari Desert Camp is a new luxury tented camp (established in 2010) which is situated in a 15,500ha concession within the
Hainaveld, along the northern boundary of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The camp is easily accessible by road - just 70km from Rakops
- as well as by air transfer from Maun.
What to see and do
Although not as prolific as the Central Kalahari wildlife sightings are still good and, when combined with the excellent
service on offer, a visit here gives you the opportunity to enjoy the Kalahari in comfort.
Game Drives
Early morning or late afternoon drives are on offer although the times are flexible depending on your schedule. At the time of our visit night
drives were not available however the intention was to offer these giving you the opportunity of seeing some of the Kalahari's nocturnal animals.
Nature Walks
Learn about the fascinating fauna and flora of the Kalahari as you walk through the bush with an experienced guide.
Central Kalahari Trips
Day trips and overnight excursions into the Central Kalahari are also offered. The day trips include a packed lunch as well as all soft drinks
whilst the overnight trips are offered on a full-board basis although a minimum of two nights is required for the overnight trips.
Wildlife
The Kalahari scrub which is typical of this area is habitat to a number of herbivores including Zebra, Gemsbok, Springbok, Impala, Kudu,
Hartebeest and Steenbok. Leopards occur here in good numbers as well as Cheetah and Lion which regularly pass through the conservancy. Warthog
can also be seen here as well as nocturnal animals such as Aardvark, Aardwolf, Springhare and Porcupine.
Birdlife here can be excellent especially during the summer months when the migrant warblers, swallows and raptors arrive. Look out for the
unmistakeable display flights of the Northern Black and Red-crested Korhaans during the summer with the latter particularly spectacular.
Eastern Clapper, Sabota, Fawn-coloured, Rufous-naped and Monotonous Larks are seen in good numbers giving you the chance to differentiate
between these 'LBJs'! Other specials that are found here include Shaft-tailed Whydah, Common Whitethroat, Chat Flycatcher and Red-backed
Shrike to name a few.
Accommodation
Perhaps the most impressive thing about this camp is the accommodation and service which is of a high standard with excellent food served by
exceptionally friendly staff. The six air-conditioned en-suite tents are built in a semi-circle overlooking a small waterhole. Three of the
tents have their own enclosed 'courtyards' which are lovely suntraps in winter. The honeymoon tent has a private plunge pool although there is
a decent sized swimming pool for guests use next to the lounge area.
The main camp features a thatched dining area, open fire place and split-level raised lounge overlooking the waterhole which attracts a
number of animals and birds, particularly during the dry winter months.
