General
Situated high on the banks of the Boteti River, overlooking three pumped waterholes, Meno a Kwena Tented Camp offers superb wildlife
viewing without having to leave the comfort of your tent.
The management prides itself on its carefully balanced combination of luxury with "rustic
Africa" which allows guests all the necessary comforts without compromising on the authentic safari experience.
What to see and do
During the dry season the waterholes are the centre of attraction providing life-giving water to a whole host of animals. The most
spectacular time is during the Zebra migration when thousands of these animals come to slake their thirst at the waterholes in the dry riverbed, before
moving on once the rains arrive to the southern grasslands of the Makgadikgadi.
Superbly built into the riverbed is a hide (right) which overlooks these waterholes allowing guests to be in close proximity to the animals without
disturbing them. Alternatively guests can relax at the pool, on couches under the gazebo or even outside their own tents and still enjoy the
constant activity at the waterholes.
During the rainy season the wildlife disperses into the surrounding bushveld
and accordingly the focus of the game viewing at the lodge changes to accommodate these seasonal migrations.
Safaris are offered into the nearby Makgadikgadi Pans National Park as well as further afield to Nxai Pan as well as Deception Valley in the
Central Kalahari. These excursions are either offered as day trips from Meno a Kwena or as a complete mobile safari experience depending on the
time of year and distances involved.
Wildlife
Animals
Meno a Kwena is famous for its huge herds of Zebra and Wildebeest that occur during the dry season however there are numerous game species that can
be seen all year round in the area. The riverine woodland provides habitat for the shy Bushbuck, commonly seen in the river bed, as well as Kudu.
Lion are commonly heard and move freely in the area around the camp and Elephant are regular visitors to the waterhole all year round. Leopard and
Brown Hyena can occasionally be seen, under a full moon, drinking at the waterholes.
Birdlife
Around the camp there are numerous bird baths which attract a variety of bird species including waxbills, finches, weavers and bulbuls. The riverine
woodland along the river bed is habitat to numerous hornbills, woodhoopoes, robins and barbets whilst in the surrounding bushveld shrikes, drongos
and francolins are commonly seen.
Raptors and Owls can be found in the tall trees along the river whilst Goshawks are frequently seen at the waterholes attracted by the
numerous Doves and Sandgrouse which fly in to drink throughout the day.
Accommodation
The Camp consists of fully serviced tents all situated high on the banks of the Boteti river with excellent views of the river bed and waterholes.
The layout of the camp is designed to maximise wildlife viewing wherever guests may be in camp.
The main section of the camp features a living/dining area and kitchen under a canvas roof and it is here that guests can relax, enjoy a
variety of traditional meals and share their experiences of the day.
Each tent is situated in a traditional kraal, which acts as a barrier against wild animals, and has a reed ablution area featuring bucket
showers (filled on request with hot water) and flush toilets. Authentic safari equipment such as canvas wash basins, metal jugs, wooden chests and
canvas chairs add to the experience.
Meno a Kwena is committed to the development of local communities and this is evidenced by the use of locally sourced materials, crafts and
artefacts throughout the camp.
