General
Situated on the southern border of the Moremi Game Reserve, the Sankuyo Conservancy is a joint venture between the Sankuyo and
Mababe villages and Lodges of Botswana. Directly benefiting the local community this Lodge offers comfortable accommodation accompanied by very
good wildlife viewing.
What to see and do
The Lodge consists of 5 built around a
central dining area where 3 meals a day are served by the resident chef. There is a well-stocked fridge where you can help yourself to ice cold
drinks.
The activities offered focus on the game viewing within the concession area and consist of:
Game Drives
If wildlife viewing is a priority you will enjoy the flexibility with which the game drives are carried out and being in a concession means you can get
closer to wildlife than normally possible. Tailored to suit your interests there are none of the time-constraints you sometimes find - it's up to
you if you want to skip breakfast and stay out until lunch to see more of the wildlife!
Night Drives
Another advantage of being in a private concession means you get the opportunity to do night drives. Your evening game drive can be extended
until after dark to allow you to see, with the aid of a spotlight, some of the nocturnal animals which otherwise go unseen.
Wildlife
Animals
The density of predators in this area is high as evidenced by the location of two predator research camps in the area which concentrate on the
Lions and Wild Dogs that are commonly seen in the area. Elephant, Buffalo and Giraffe are common whilst the open grassland surrounded by wooded
areas is perfect habitat for a variety of Antelope from the small Steenbok to the larger Kudu, Tssessebe and Wildebeest. Nocturnal animals such as
Leopard, Spotted Hyena, Small spotted genet, Porcupine and Springhare can be seen on night drives.
Birdlife Santawani is on the edge of the Okavango and has a semi-arid habitat which results in a wide-range of birdlife with
raptor sightings being particularly good. Martial Eagle and Bateleur are common as is the Secretarybird. The scrub-savannah is home to Helmetshrikes,
Thrushes, Tits and Robin-chats whilst during the summer months numerous Swifts, Swallows and Bee-eaters can be seen over the open grassland. Night
drives are good for spotting Owls, Nightjars and Thick-knees which are difficult to spot during the day.
Accommodation
There are 5 simple but comfortable, brick-built, en-suite rondavels which are pleasantly situated amongst tall trees overlooking an open area with
animals such as Impala, Giraffe and Elephant occasionally seen from the comfort of the chalet.
