MAUN

Description and history

Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta and is sometimes described as the tourism capital of Botswana. Situated on the Thamalakane River, one of the main rivers flowing from the Delta, Maun has a thriving tourist industry with numerous safari operators based here. The town itself has a population of 60,000 although the tourist trade and the resultant bustle of activity make it seem more. Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park are easily accessible within a few hours drive of Maun whilst the upmarket lodges are accessed by light aircraft from Maun Airport - the busiest airport in Botswana due to the number of tourist flights!

Features

The town centre has a good variety of shops with Spar, Score and Shoprite supermarkets offering a wide range of groceries - the demand of the tourist trade means a slightly better variety of food products compared with some other towns in Botswana!

Apart from the main attractions of Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park there are a number of other activities that can be booked in the town itself. Day trips by mokoro into the Okavango Delta can be arranged whilst most of the air charter companies do scenic flights over the Okavango.
